Rudolf Schlenker

Rudolf Schlenker (born June 18, 1915 in Dortmund , † March 16, 1994 in Hamburg ) was a German industrial manager. From 1975 to 1980 he was President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

education and profession

After graduating from high school, Schlenker first completed an apprenticeship as an export and import merchant, then studied business administration at the University of Cologne and completed his studies with a degree in business administration. He took part in the Second World War as an officer. Since 1944 he was married to Liselotte Riesenberg. After the war he was first employed in the civil service as head of department for the consumer goods industry in the Agriculture Office in Karlsruhe and from 1947 in the Economic Office of the Bizone in Minden and Frankfurt am Main . In 1948 he moved to the administrative office for economics, the forerunner of the Federal Ministry of Economics in Bonn , where he became a close employee of Ludwig Erhard as a consultant for the luxury food industry and distinguished himself as a specialist in tobacco. In 1951 he went to the International Raw Materials Conference in Washington as permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Work at Reemtsma

The Hamburg cigarette manufacturer Philipp Reemtsma recruited him in 1953 due to his good contacts with the government agencies in Bonn and Schlenker became a member of the board of the Reemtsma cigarette factories in Hamburg-Altona. In the absence of suitable successors in the owner family, Philipp Reemtsma made Schlenker spokesman for the board in 1958, shortly before his death. After the death of his brother Hermann Reemtsma , Schlenker became the company's sole chairman in 1962. In the following years, Schlenker built up a second line of business in the group with the acquisition of beverage producers. a. with stakes in Brauhaus Moninger , Nürnberger Brau AG , Dortmunder Union Brewery , Hannen Brewery and Bavaria-St. Pauli brewery . After the poor economic development of the cigarette business, Schlenker was replaced as chairman of the board by Manfred Emcke on January 1, 1974, and moved to the supervisory board in 1975.

Consultant in investment management for the federal government and the Hanseatic City of Hamburg

In mid-1974, the then Federal Minister of Finance, Helmut Schmidt, secured the services of Schlenker, who was supposed to help organize the government's numerous participations for the ministry. After Hamburg's mayor Hans-Ulrich Klose and Senator for Economic Affairs Wilhelm Nölling bought their 20.25% stake in Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB) from the heirs of Walther Blohm in order to secure jobs in Hamburg, Schlenker became managing director of the Hamburg company for asset and investment management and as a consultant for MBB. When MBB was taken over by Daimler-Benz AG in 1990 , the Hanseatic city exchanged its shares for shares in the newly founded DASA AG and sent Schlenker to the supervisory board. Just four years later, Schlenker died at the age of 79.

Honorary and supervisory positions

Rudolf Schlenker was chairman of the Association of the Cigarette Industry , from 1975 to 1980 President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and from 1976 to 1980 also Vice President of the DIHK . He held supervisory board mandates at Deutsche Bank AG , Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik AG , Nord-Deutsche and Hamburg-Bremer Versicherungs-AG and Hapag-Lloyd and was a member of the advisory boards of Henkel AG , Aachener and Munchener Feuer- Versicherung AG , the Gerling Insurance Group and Hermes Kreditversicherungs AG .

Orders and honors

In 1993 Schlenker received the Mayor Stolten Medal as the highest honor for his services to the Hanseatic City of Hamburg .
