Rudolf "Rudi" Schweinberger (born April 10, 1935 in Mayrhofen ; † February 17, 2008 ) was an Austrian skier.
Career
Schweinberger moved with his parents to Mühlbach am Hochkönig before the start of the Second World War . After graduating from school there, he trained as a carpenter. Shortly afterwards, he joined the Austrian Post as an employee. Schweinberger started skiing at a young age through Josef Bradl and experimented in various disciplines. Together with Toni Sailer , he also competed in alpine ski races.
In the early 1950s, Schweinberger concentrated on the Nordic ski disciplines and in 1953 became Junior II champion in ski jumping . In the same year he also won the junior classification of the Kongsberg Cup. In 1954 he repeated his junior title in ski jumping and also won the Nordic combined . At the end of the year he made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament 1954/55 . However, after he only competed two competitions, he only achieved 22nd place overall.
Schweinberger finally jumped to the top of the world in the Four Hills Tournament 1955/56 . After two top 20 placements in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he jumped into the top ten for the first time with 10th place in Innsbruck . After he achieved his first and only career podium with third place in Bischofshofen , Schweinberger finished the tour in third place overall.
At the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , Schweinberger reached 19th place after jumps on 74.5 and 75 meters.
In the following years Schweinberger did not succeed in building on his successful 1955/56 season. At the Four Hills Tournament in 1956/57 he achieved his second-best result with 15th place in the overall ranking, but he didn't get a top 10 placement.
He traveled to the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 as a substitute. However, it was not used. At the end of the season, Schweinberger started the ski flying week in Oberstdorf, where he jumped his personal best with 117 meters. For the 1958/59 season he missed a starting place in the Four Hills Tournament for the first time . It was not until the Four Hills Tournament in 1959/60 that he came back to the senior national team, but there were no successes, so that after two weak years he ended his active ski jumping career in 1961.
After the end he settled in Bad Hofgastein with his wife Leopoldine and his four children and lived there until his death in 2008. His son Erich Schweinberger also started as a ski jumper, but did not get beyond the B national team.
