Rudolf Sylvius Neumann

Rudolf Sylvius von Neumann (born December 22, 1805 in Carlsruhe , Opole district ; †  April 30, 1881 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Rudolf Sylvius was the son of Johann Heinrich Neumann (1766-1853) and his wife Karoline Friederike, née Gernoth (1777-1859).

Military career

Neumann joined the 6th Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army on November 2, 1821 and attended the United Artillery and Engineering School in 1823/25 . On March 28, 1827, he was promoted to second lieutenant. Since September 10, 1840, Neumann was a member of the artillery examination commission . In 1861 he was promoted to colonel and as such took part in the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen during the German-Danish War in 1864 with Prince Friedrich Karl's staff . For his achievements during the attack Neumann was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords.

On February 28, 1865 he was appointed President of the Artillery Examination Commission and in the same year on March 22, raised to the nobility for his services to the artillery . In June 1865 he was promoted to major general . From October 10, 1866, Neumann was also a member of the study commission for the War Academy . Neumann finally received the character of Lieutenant General on March 22, 1868 and was put up for disposal on July 2, 1868 with a pension .

Neumann was progressive, he suggested a rational internal ballistics and justified scientific construction of the rifled guns . He also designed a usable percussion fuse . For thirty years Neumann also worked on editing the archive for the artillery and engineering officers of the Prussian and later the German army.

family

Neumann had married Luise Karoline Auguste Wigaart (1826–1909) on August 21, 1845 in Berlin. The marriage had two sons:

  • Paul Louis (* 1847), Prussian major
