Rupert Ignaz Mayr
Rupert Ignaz Mayr (* 1646 in Schärding / Inn; † February 7, 1712 in Freising ) was a German violinist , composer and court music director.
life and work
Rupert Ignaz Mayr was born in Schärding am Inn (today Upper Austria) in 1646. Little is known about his youth and his musical training. Presumably he had lessons in nearby Passau . In 1678 he was violinist in the episcopal chapel in Eichstätt and partly in Regensburg , from 1683 to 1685 at the episcopal court in Passau and from 1685 at the electoral court chapel with Maximilian II. Emanuel in Munich . The elector sent him to Paris to study with Jean-Baptiste Lully . From 1706 he was the episcopal court conductor with Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing and Liechteneck in Freising, where he died on February 7, 1712.
In accordance with his areas of responsibility as violinist and court conductor, Mayr preferred to create church music and instrumental works. The seven orchestral suites “Pythagorische Schmids-Fuencklein” from 1692 are particularly well-known, with which he alludes to the legend of Pythagoras in the smithy about the discovery of the numerical relationships of the musical intervals. He also provided music for some school dramas (see also Jesuit theater ), as can be seen from some surviving documents. Similar to Georg Muffat , who was also a student of Lully, or Johann Philipp Krieger , he combines French, Italian and German elements in a highly baroque tonal language.
