action

Single mother Renee Morgan is plagued by a fear of spiders . One day she makes an appointment to go skydiving with a colleague. She brings her son Evan to the father and wants to drive to the meeting point. But then a tire bursts on her car. A delivery truck stops and a man offers to help. But suddenly Renee is attacked, tied up, drugged and kidnapped in the van.

The kidnappers take her to a distant building and when she wakes up, she is tied to a bed. Another prisoner tells her to memorize G1012X, but she has no idea what is happening to her.

As she shakes her chains, she hears the voice of a man in the next room who introduces himself as Blake. While they are exchanging their impressions, Renee manages to get hold of a knife that she brought from home and uses it to cut a handcuff. Your kidnappers come in. They know about Evan, ask her numerous questions about medical facts and fears, and do an eye test. They also inject her with an unknown liquid and rub her face. Renee is cooperative, but remains clueless.

After experiencing some hallucinations , the kidnappers put a dangerous spider on her arm without achieving the desired effect. They talk about a rupture that has not yet occurred and that Renee should reach a different state. Renee gets her hand out of the cut ankle and frees herself from the couch. She climbs through ventilation shafts and sees people through the grilles in other rooms, on whom terrifying experiments are being carried out. She overhears a conversation about fractures and sterile women. In a shaft it reaches the roof, but no further.

Instead, she finds Blake, whom she spoke to earlier, in another room. He has the mysterious G1012X and is afraid of snakes. But then Blake is picked up. Renee sneaks through the building. She sees a map of the world with places marked and a man who puts strange contact lenses in his eyes. She hears that Blake was "about to do it" and that it is her turn now. She quickly goes back to her couch and puts the bonds back on.

She learns from Dianne that she should be more than scared to death. G1012X is a genetic sequence that could solve many problems by breaking these genes. When Dianne shows who these mysterious people really are, her face becomes extremely contorted. At that moment Renee rams a syringe into her throat with his free hand and flees again. She comes to a laboratory where she finds genetic material from different people. She learns that her egg is immune to normal human sperm . But she is discovered, locked up, and drugged again.

When she woke up after a day and a half, she was lying on a bed on an IV. The kidnap team comes to her and shows her that she can suddenly hear and see much better. With her the announced break in the genes is imminent and she is reaching a superhuman state. Human feelings should now be alien to her. These novel beings are supposed to stop humans from destroying the earth. Then the team puts a clear mask on Renee's head and lets spiders inside. Renee reacts in a wild panic, but suddenly she becomes calm and her face melts, as she has seen before with Dianne. The break has occurred.

Later, Renee is back home and Evan notices that she's acting differently. She watches a video of another victim on the Internet. Then the team comes to her. They want to kidnap Evan, but Renee still has enough human feelings to warn her son in time and urge him to flee. But the kidnappers tell her that she should be the mother of a new generation. She is trapped in the new world.

criticism

Gregor Torinus recognizes in his criticism of film starts .de “a bizarre-fetishistic aesthetic in bright colors”, but regrets that the top-class actors “cannot compensate for the clear dramaturgical weaknesses”. Michael Drewniok also complains about dramaturgical and logical weaknesses at Filmbesommunikungen.de and sees a "finale, which is supposed to shock but is also at best stuck to an action that has suddenly become superfluous". Jeannette Catsoulist writes in the New York Times that "this lengthy torture story will disappoint even those whose hearts always race when they see a woman tied to a bed." For the reviewer at Kino.de, however , the film is an eccentric shocker with a SciFi twist, which scores with an unusual visual design and large star ensemble.

Awards

The film won the Film4Life Award at the Ferrara Film Festival in 2017.
