The Ruyschia are a genus of plants from the Marcgraviaceae family with nine species . The genus is named after the Dutch anatomist and botanist Frederik Ruysch (1638–1731).

description

Ruyschia are climbing shrubs or lianas . The leaves are short-stalked. The inflorescences form dense, multi-flowered clusters of 20 to 30 (rarely up to 50) flowers . The flowers are small, short-stalked, the nectaries are small, sessile, up to semicircular or almost round, start at the base of the flowers or on the upper half of the flower stalk and are usually firm.

The petals are not overgrown or only weakly overgrown at the base. There are three or five stamens , the stamens are fused with the base of the petals, the stigma is head-shaped. The ovaries are bicameral, there are up to twenty ovules .

distribution

The genus is new-worldly , it can be found in the higher elevations of Central America and the northern Andes , but extends to the Lesser Antilles .
