from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sámal Petur Martinsson í Grund (born July 26, 1958 in Syðrugøta , Faroe Islands ) is a Faroese mechanic, boatman and politician of the liberal-separatist progress party Framsókn , as well as a former member of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin . He was a member of parliament and minister for communications, culture, tourism and shipping in the Faroese state government from 1994 to December 1997 and minister for social affairs and health from February 2001 to May 2002.

Profession and Politics

Sámal Petur í Grund completed his training as an electrical mechanic in 1980 and worked on factory ships until 1985 . From 1986 to 1991 he was a seaman's missionary and from 1991 to 1993 he went to sea himself. He received a seaman's license in 1994 and has been working as a helmsman and skipper at Strandfaraskip Landsins (SSL), which operates the ferry service between the islands in the Faroe Islands, since 2002 .

Sámal Petur í Grund was Minister for Communication, Culture, Tourism and Shipping in the Faroese state governments from 1994 to 1997 Edmund Joensen I (1994-1996) and Edmund Joensen II (1996-1998). On December 1, 1997 he was dismissed by Edmund Joensen because he considered the additional 40 million kroner demanded by í Grund for the tunneling under Vestmannasund as irresponsible and Sámal Petur í Grund then sought support for his plans from the opposition. The Sjálvstýrisflokkurin left the ruling coalition as a result.

In the subsequent elections in April 1998 he succeeded in getting to the Faroese Parliament (Løgting) through a compensatory mandate as a member of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin , to which he was a member until 2002.

Sámal Petur í reason was to succeed Helena Dam á Neystabø on 26 February 2001 Minister of Social Affairs and Health in the state government anfinn kallsberg I . He stayed that way until May 2002.

When Helena Dam á Neystabø, who had been party leader of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin since 1994, withdrew her candidacy for party chairmanship in early November 2001 after disagreements with Sámal Petur í Grund (and later left the party to join the social democratic Javnaáarflokkurin in early 2002 ) Petur í Grund elected the new party chairman on November 10, 2001. However, he gave this post a good two weeks later, on November 27, to his deputy Eyðun Elttør .

In the Løgtingswahl on January 19, 2008, Sámal Petur í Grund ran again as a member of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin, but could only achieve the fourth-best result within his party with 194 personal votes. He was then on the list of successors in second place and in 2009 represented Kári á Rógvi for some time.

In 2011 he finally moved with others from Sjálvstýrisflokkurin to the newly founded liberal-separatist progress party Framsókn by Poul Michelsen . In the Løgtingswahl 2011 he ran for a seat of parliament, but could only achieve the fifth best result within Framsókn with 111 personal votes.

In 2015, his party put him up again as a candidate in the Løgtings election. But this time he only came in eleventh place with 67 personal votes.
