Sérgio Henrique Ferreira (born October 4, 1934 in Franca , state of Sao Paulo , Brazil ; † July 17, 2016 in Ribeirão Preto , state of Sao Paulo) was a Brazilian pharmacologist and doctor.

Ferreira studied at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) at the Medical Faculty in Ribeirão Preto. He did research there with Mauricio Rocha e Silva (the discoverer of bradykinin ) in pharmacology. There he discovered peptides in the venom of the Jararaca lance viper (Bothrops jararaca), which significantly increased the effect of bradykinin (bradykinin potentiating factor, BPF). In 1968, in collaboration with Lewis Joel Greene from the Brookhaven National Laboratory , he was able to characterize the BPF peptides more precisely and clarify their structure. It suppresses angiotensin I conversion (via the angiotensin converting enzyme , ACE). This ultimately led to the development of the first ACE inhibitors at the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb ( Captopril ).

In the early 1970s Ferreira was in London, where he worked with John R. Vane on the mode of action of non- steroidal painkillers ( analgesics or NSAIDs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that have anti-inflammatory effects. Back then, he was also involved in Vane's research, which clarified the mechanism of ASA (suppression of prostaglandin synthesis by Cox inhibition) and for which Vane received the Nobel Prize. He further clarified the effect of analgesics such as Metamizol (Novalgin) - they counteract the irritation of the primary sensory cells via the nitric oxide axis.

His group also clarified the role of various cytokines in inflammation.

Ferreira has been researching at the Institute of Pharmacology at the University of Sao Paulo in Ribeirão Preto since 1961, where he is a professor.

In 1983 Ferreira received the CIBA Prize for Hypertension Research with Miguel Ondetti and David Cushman from Squibb and in 1995 the National Order for Merit to Science (Grand Cross level) of Brazil. Other prizes were: the Mexican Prize for Science and Technology, the Rheimboldt-Hauptmann Prize of the University of Sao Paulo (2001), the Prize of the Third World Academy of Science, the Péter Murányi Prize (2002) and the Prince Mahidol Prize in 2008 . Ferreira is an external member of the National Academy of Sciences , member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Council for Science and Technology . He is the founder and past president of the Brazilian Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC).
