The Söterbach is about 8.5 km (by Känel Bach 12.3 km) long stream in the northeastern Saarland at the edge of the Hunsrück belonging Schwarzwalder Hochwald . It flows entirely in the St. Wendel district and is a west-north-west and left tributary of the Nahe . It has its origin in the confluence of the Känelbach and Krippbach rivers , the catchment area covers 27.71 km².

Surname

The name Söterbach is said to have developed from an ablaut variant of ancient Germanic "sauþ-a" (simmer, cook). This could refer to the foaming observed in the rapidly flowing water.

geography

Spring streams

The Känelbach is the almost 4 km long north and left source creek of the Söterbach. It is also seen by some as its upper reaches. It rises in the Black Forest high forest a good 1 km southeast of Neuhütten and joins the Nohfeldener Weiler Waldbach with the Krippbach coming from the west to the Söterbach.

The Krippbach is the 2.5 km long western and right source brook of the Söterbach. It is also seen by some as its tributary. It rises a good 1.5 km east-northeast of Otzenhausen and joins in Nohfelden-Waldbach with the Känelbach coming from the north to form the Söterbach.

course

After the union of its two source streams at an altitude of about 420  m , the Söterbach flows in a south-easterly direction through the Nohfeldener villages and districts Obersötern , Sötern and Eckelhausen . At Türkismühle it flows into the Nahe from the left at a height of less than 380  m .

Flora and fauna

The Söterbach initially flows through the high forest, later through extensively used valley meadows. Willows and alders are mainly found on the bank , which are hardly used economically today.

Gray herons and mallards are the most common water birds in the Bachtal, and the dipper and kingfisher also have their habitat on the fast-flowing water.

Mills

Former mills:
