The South Mountains are a low mountain range up to 164 meters high in the south of the Fildes Peninsula of King George Island , the largest of the South Shetland Islands . The mountains occupy the southern half of the peninsula, being separated from the coast in the northwest by the northwest platform. It is set off from the northwest platform and the central passage by steep flanks.

As part of two German research trips to the Fildes Peninsula in 1981/82 and 1983/84 under the direction of Dietrich Barsch (1936–2018; Geographical Institute of Heidelberg University) and Gerhard Stäblein (1939–1993; Geomorphological Laboratory of the Free University of Berlin ) the mountain was renamed along with numerous other hitherto unnamed geographic features of the Fildes peninsula and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic research reported (Scientific Committee on Antarctic research, SCAR).

Mountains, lakes and streams

In the north the Büdelberg (131 m) rise up on the steep drop to the northwest platform , the Fossil Hill (107 m) and on the coast of the Ardley Cove the Cross Mesa (40 m); in the west is the highest point at 164 meters, the Horatio Stump ; striking elevations in the middle of the mountains are Trollberg and Clement Hill (135 m), and in the south near the Fildes Strait were Biyu Shan (113 m) and Guibei Shan by researchers at the Great Wall station named. The only 17 meter high Qixiang Shan is located on the site of the station, on the coast of Hydrographers Cove .

To the east, Long Lake (across the Hydrographers Stream ), Petrel Lake (across the Petrel Stream ), Gaoshan Lake, and Yanou Lake drain towards Hydrographers Cove; flow in this bay and the wind stream - the valley Saunders Valley , on the southern corridor is connected with the North West platform - the mist stream and lichen Bach . In the southwest, the Geographensee drains over the Geographenbach to Geographers Cove and the Jurasee over the Jurabach to Fildes Strait , near which Belén Lake is also located.
