Săveni is a city in Botoșani County in Romania .

location

Săveni is located in the Moldau Plain ( Câmpia Moldovei ), in the valley of the Başeu River , a right tributary of the Prut . The district capital Botoșani is located about 30 km southwest.

history

Săveni was first mentioned in a document in 1546 - during the reign of the Moldovan Prince Petru Rareș . The existence of Bozieni, which is incorporated today, has been documented since 1432. Numerous Jews settled here around the 18th century . In 1818 Săveni received market rights, in 1859 it became a local administrative center, and in 1950 it was the seat of the municipality. Săveni has been a city since 1968.

The most important economic sectors are agriculture, the food, textile and construction industries.

population

In 1930 about 5000 people lived in the city, about a third of whom were Jewish, the rest of them were of other faith. In the 2002 census, 8,145 inhabitants were registered in Săveni, including 7,981 Romanians , 155 Roma and 4 people of Jewish faith. In 2011 there were 6,999 inhabitants, 6,424 Romanians, 183 Roma and the rest without any ethnic information.

Săveni has no rail connection. There are bus connections to Iași several times a day . The national road Drum National 29 runs through the city from Suceava to Manoleasa .
