The ÖBB 2060 was a diesel locomotive series of the Austrian Federal Railways .

From 1954 the Jenbacher Werke (JW) produced the two-axle diesel locomotives of the type "DH 200 B28" for the ÖBB in several lots. The machines took over the easy shifting to train stations throughout Germany, as the older steam locomotives still used there were very uneconomical. In addition, they were also used in light service in the first few years. Although this type with only 200 hp turned out to be too weak for many of the intended purposes, the ÖBB still procured a total of 100 copies, the construction period extended until 1962. The machines of the last construction lot from 2060.81 had a few compared to the previously delivered locomotives Improvements, such as a triple headlights . The front end and driver's cab were already painted orange-red instead of fir green at the factory, and a little higher, thus improving the sound insulation.

The 2060 series can be seen as the "little sister" of the twice as strong ÖBB 2062 , which was put into service four years later .

technical features

A four-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the type JW200, which is characteristic of the manufacturer, was used as the drive unit . This uncharged, fill-regulated V-engine developed 147 kW at 1500 rpm. The cooling water is recooled by a fan that is driven by a V-belt. Webasto devices have been retrofitted for preheating and holding . The power is transmitted via a hydraulic transmission from Voith (type L33yU). A rear-mounted gearbox enables you to change between two speed levels when the vehicle is stationary, which limit the top speed either to 30 km / h ("maneuvering gear") or to 60 km / h ("route gear").

Specialty

In the 2060.01-73 specimens, two locomotives could originally be operated in tandem (two locomotives are operated from one) by being connected to a control shaft. For this it was necessary that the two locomotives with the driver's cabs were coupled to one another. In addition, the tandem shaft had to be installed between the locomotives. This cumbersome operating mode was only used very rarely in the first few years and soon became superfluous with the delivery of the more powerful 2062 and 2067 series.

Use in the USSR

45 locomotives were delivered to the former USSR in 1956–1957 . They were preferred by the Moscow-Ryazan Railway , the Kirov Railway , the Priwolschskaja schelesnaja Doroga , the Omsk Railway and the Orenburg Railway . They were later transferred to other railway lines. Use dates and possible retirement cannot be found in the literature.

Whereabouts

Locomotive 7 in service with the Gmundner cement works

Of the 100 units built, more than half have already been scrapped, the rest are parked, but some of them continue to do internal service at traction locations. In addition, the five locomotives 2060 022, 058, 065, 092, 099 and the identically constructed locomotive 4 ex port railway Linz are owned by the ÖGEG and are used for shunting work, but also in front of museum trains. The locomotives 2060 004, 037 and 074 belong to the 1.ÖSEK association , the 2060 091 is owned by the Neue Landesbahn association, the 2060 023 was bought by the Hatschek works and is now used as locomotive 7 on the Gmundner cement works . In addition, four locomotives were sold to Italy and seven other machines to various private railways . 2060 009 is a memorial on Bahnhofplatz in Stammersdorf .
