The sports club Janus e. V. (SC Janus) is Europe's oldest and largest sports club for lesbians , gays and friends, based in Cologne . In addition to sporting activities, the association also makes a contribution to promoting tolerance towards LGBT people and has thus become known nationwide and outside the gay and lesbian community.

history

founding

The club was founded in 1980 by gay volleyball players as the Janus volleyball club (VC Janus) in Cologne, making it the first club in Europe for gay athletes. At this socio-politically much more heteronormative time, the double- faced Roman deity Janus was supposed to point out the homosexual context that was typically hidden at that time. An open commitment to sexual orientation took place in 1989.

Further sports offers and chosen orientation

As there was a demand, the club's offer was expanded to include sports such as badminton , gymnastics and swimming . In 1991 the name was changed to the current club name Sportclub Janus (SC Janus), which did justice to the increasingly broader offer. There are also less common sports, such as the male cheerleading group “Pink Poms”, founded in 1993 , which was one of the first groups of this sport in Europe, as well as billiards , Krav Maga and Thai Chi . The quota of women was initially around 10 percent and was therefore rather low. The basic question that is typical in the scene, whether the previously mostly gay target group should be expanded to include lesbians, was decided in 1995 with the establishment of the post of a women's representative in favor of a joint sports club for the entire scene. The current quota of women is around 40 percent.

Current status

In 2017, the association had around 1,600 members and offered 45 sports in 80 training offers in both popular and competitive sports. The club is currently the largest sports club for the target group in Europe. The club's motto chosen by the members is: "SC Janus - more than sport" and aims at an attitude for integration and against exclusion. According to its own information, the club is among the 15 sports clubs in Cologne with the largest number of members.

Sporting events and successes

In the same year, the club's "Cream Team Cologne" soccer team took part in the Gay Games in New York City and won their first gold medal. In 1995 the team founded the Come-Together-Cup , which has now been established in Cologne , and the former Lord Mayor of Cologne Jürgen Roters is the patron. In addition to the sporting competition, the annual benefit tournament aims to promote encounters between different groups of people and to collect funds for charitable purposes.

In 2000, the club's next major sporting event followed with the organization of the gay and lesbian soccer world championship. In 2010, the association successfully applied to host the Gay Games, which were organized by games cologne gGmbH with the participation of the association. Club members successfully take part in tournaments themselves.
