SEO (bourgeois Seo Su-gyeong; Korean 서수경 ) (* 1977 in Gwangju ) is a South Korean artist . Your stage name is the family name written in capital letters as a trademark.

Life

She attended the Gwangju Art High School from 1992 to 1996. From 1996 to 2000 she studied at Chosun University in Gwangju and at the end of her studies she received an award for best student of the year . In the same year she left South Korea and in 2001 began studying at the University of the Arts in Berlin , in the class of the painter Georg Baselitz . During her basic course, which she completed in 2003, she received an order from the Korean embassy to design the United Buddy Bear for her home country, which she and the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus , then presented at the first exhibition of this international art event in 2002 Wowereit , was revealed. From 2003 to 2004 she attended the master class and became a master student of Baselitz. Her exhibition activities in galleries and museums began in 1999 in Korea and Germany. She lives in Berlin .

Works

Although SEO is considered a painter, her work can also be viewed as mixed media. Usually a blank canvas is the starting point for a preliminary drawing, which is then filled in with a multitude of torn rice paper snippets ( mulberry or Tetrapanax ) using the collage technique . SEO has some of the papers printed for itself in Korea, especially the ones with their own designs. In the next step, thin and (semi-) transparent layers of paint follow to complete the picture.

First, she developed a linear painting style, with whitish lines that supported the character definition and described the virtual outline. These white lines, however, have to be seen as narrow bands of pure painting, with changing densities and tones, resulting in a suitable combination of macro and micro structure. She got involved with European culture without giving up her Asian background and relies on “cultural reconstruction”, for example when she conjures up the spirit of German Romanticism in her pictures .

In the course of their development, the linear element lost importance while the color gained importance. Their reaction to world events, the everyday in life and in politics, leads to statements about these topics on the basis of an aesthetic concept, which also includes the definition of the image as a moment isolated from the permanent stream of images in consciousness, whereby it then is no longer about the objects themselves, but about the essence of things.

The largest part of her oeuvre consists of groups of works that are formed around a central idea, a leitmotif or a leading draft. For example in “My German Dreams”, “Rice Fields”, the pictures of the groups “War” and “Water Lilies”. There are large-format pictures in all groups, but the “water lilies” tend to be most monumental. In the exhibition in the Kunsthalle Rostock , "close encounter - robert rauschenberg - seo" in 2008, she showed a very large picture with a body of water full of water lilies and a mountain range in the background. The landscape consists of partial images of actually existing landscapes from different countries, which makes it a symbol of the world. The water lilies depict all 47 types of water lily, which, in addition to the reference to Monet , who was at the height of his water lily series 100 years earlier, is also said to have symbolic quality. More than a million pieces of paper have been processed in the picture.

SEOs “Meine German Träume” deals with their experience in Germany. It processes and cites Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Caspar David Friedrich and Carl Spitzweg and the sculptures that belong to the pictures are made of "German Silver" ("German silver"; that is, nickel silver, nickel silver, Argentan, Alpacca ) and show what kind it is typically German: beer barrels , garden gnomes , deer antlers and - cows.

In the 2010s, SEO expanded its spectrum. In an exhibition at Palazzo Bembo, “Personal Structures”, as part of the Venice Biennale , SEO exhibited an installation of four of her concentric, abstract “energy” images, together with a flat display case filled with rock crystal, illuminated from below . "German Diamonds"). She also discovered photography for herself. A series of her photos of a naked lightbulb was published in “art.es” magazine no. 47 published.
