Gerhard Charles Rump

Gerhard Charles Rump (born February 24, 1947 in Bochum ; † July 26, 2020 in Berlin ) was an art historian and art theorist with a focus on contemporary art , private lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin , curator , gallery owner and photo artist .

biography

He was born on February 24, 1947 in Bochum. After graduating from the Graf Engelbert School in 1967, he studied art history , English , philosophy , pedagogy and psychology at the Ruhr University in Bochum from 1968 to 1972 , and later anthropology at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University in Bonn. In 1972 he received his doctorate on the British portraitist of the 18th century George Romney .

He became a subject librarian at the University Library in Bochum before starting an assistant for art history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in 1974. From 1983 on he worked as a freelance journalist for “ Die Welt ” and “ Rheinische Merkur ” as well as for regional newspapers such as the “ Kölnische Rundschau ” and the “Bonner Rundschau”. He also worked as an asset advisor for " Deutsche Vermögensberatung ". In 1986/7 he was a preservationist for the city of Wesel , before he worked for the printer manufacturer Mannesmann Tally (now Tally Genicom ) in 1987, initially as a manager for corporate communications and later as marketing director. In 1987 he completed his habilitation at the University of Duisburg .

In 1994 he returned to journalism as an editor for the art market of the newspaper Die Welt, while continuing his research on art history and art theory. The media theory represented a main area; especially art communication and semiotics . He also continued his career as a photo artist. In 2009 he was one of the co-authors of Konstantin Akinsha's contribution to the Russian avant-garde , which received the Clarion Award from the Association for Women in Communications .

In 2010 he finally left “Die Welt” to concentrate on university teaching, writing and curating exhibitions. In 2011 he founded the art project and producer gallery “RAR Gallery” together with Catrin Rothe and Bernhard Ailinger - Berlin , New York (NY) and Palo Alto (CA).
