Overview of the components: SIMATIC S7

Simatic is a product name from Siemens . It is used for products in the automation technology , the control technology and the manufacturing execution level used.

Product history

Siemens Simatic N

In the early days of the programmable controller, there was the Simatic in version G with germanium single semiconductors. It came onto the market on April 2, 1958 as the Simatic connection-programmed controller (VPS).

On April 2, 1958, the name Simatic was registered with the German Patent Office as a trademark of Siemens-Schuckertwerke . Simatic combines " Si emens" and "Auto matic " as a portmanteau word to each other.

The models N (1964) with silicon single semiconductors, H, P and C (1973) as an integrated circuit followed within the next 15 years. The transition from the cumbersome VPS to the much more efficient programmable logic controller (PLC) was achieved with modest success in 1973 with the Simatic S3. In 1979 the Simatic S5 came onto the market with great success. It was continuously developed until 1995 and is partly still available from Siemens until 2020. For the first time, all three types of representation were consistently offered for the user program: instruction list , function plan and contact plan . In 1994, the Simatic S7, which is currently up-to-date and continuously developed, was introduced. The GRAPH sequence language was added as a further display type , a format based on the GRAFCET specification language .

The controls are discussed in more detail below.

Controls

The control functions are saved as a program in the memory of a CPU module . The Simatic is programmed using the programming software STEP 7 (formerly STEP 5 ) or software from third-party manufacturers. The automation system is modular and, in addition to the CPU, can be equipped with various digital and analog peripheral modules as well as preprocessing, intelligent modules. The modules can be set up centrally (in the vicinity of the CPU) or decentrally on site in the system. From the small compact device to the high-performance PLC, there are Simatic controls for almost every area of application in industrial control and regulation technology . What all Simatic-S7 controls have in common is their robustness against electromagnetic interference (in accordance with the requirements of the EMC directive ) and climatic stress (e.g. from 0 to +60 ° C ambient temperature during operation) and their expandability (see data below). The Simatic-S7 controllers and their STEP 7 programming software are the most widespread of their kind in Germany (35%).

  • Simatic S7-1500
Siemens presented the new Simatic S7-1500 controller at the press conference of the SPS / IPC / DRIVES trade fair in Nuremberg in 2012. This should gradually replace the S7-300 and S7-400, phasing out is not planned before 2020. Motion control functions are now integrated as standard in every CPU, safety (up to SIL 3 according to IEC 62061 and PL e according to ISO 13849 ) is available in the fail-safe CPU variants. The first CPUs are the S7-1511, S7-1513 and S7-1516 with graduated performance features. The CPUs can be expanded with up to 32 modules. The terminal-to-terminal reaction time is less than 500 µs. The bit command time can be faster than 10 ns. Each CPU has Profinet interfaces. All CPUs have an integrated web server. The controllers are certified according to EN 61508 . STEP 7 version 12 or higher is required to program the controller. For the first time, a PLC also has a color LCD display. This enables extensive system diagnostics down to the decentralized terminals and drives. In order to increase data security, a comprehensive and graduated concept for access to program and data up to know-how protection was implemented in the S7-1500.
