The Sachsendamm with a length of approximately 1,700 meters, an important urban connection in the Berlin district of Schöneberg and performs as an extension of Dominicusstraße to the district border with Tempelhof , where he goes to the junction with the Alboinstraße in the Schöneberg Street. A small section of the route follows the former Marienfelder Weg .
Naming
The Sachsendamm, named on March 27, 1907, is named after the West Germanic tribe of the Saxons .
Development
The Sachsendamm forms the southern border of the so-called "Schöneberger Lens", which is bounded in the northern area by the route of the Ringbahn . Only in the area between Tempelhofer Weg and Gotenstrasse has little residential development. Otherwise, it is characterized by commercial buildings such as the Höffner furniture store (on the site of which the Schöneberg cycling track was previously located), the Schöneberg sports center , some of which is listed , the Südkreuz train station and the parallel city motorway with the Schöneberg motorway junction .
traffic
The street, which is partially developed with four to six lanes in the median, serves mainly through traffic and connects the western Berlin city with the southern districts of the capital as well as the connection to the city ring and the western bypass . At the crossing from Dominicusstraße is the Schöneberg train station , where the S-Bahn lines of the Ringbahn intersect with the S-Bahn line S1 of the Wannseebahn . At the level of the Südkreuz station, the Sachsendamm passes under the north-south long-distance railway , which runs in a north-south direction and provides connections to Halle (Saale) , Leipzig and Dresden . The section between Dominicusstraße and the junction to the city motorway is part of Bundesstraße 1 . Line 60 of the Berlin tram ran through the street until May 2, 1962 , while line 6 was discontinued on July 1, 1961 .
Between 1972 and 1996, the Sachsendamm was regarded as the notorious “bottleneck” for traffic in this area due to its capacity-limiting constriction: The route of the neighboring city motorway passed under a shunting yard of the Dresdener Bahn , whose operating rights were held by the Deutsche Reichsbahn . Since the negotiations with the owner of the rights at the time (indirectly the GDR ) remained fruitless, all traffic on the city motorway had to be diverted to the Sachsendamm, which regularly led to backwater. Only after the exchange of areas and the replacement of signal boxes could the further construction of the city motorway in the direction of Tempelhof and Neukölln begin.
