Sadashiv Kanoji Patil ( Marathi सदाशिव कानोजी पाटील Sadāśiv Kānojī Pāṭīl ; born August 14, 1900 in Sawantwadi , Sindhudurg District , Presidency of Bombay , British India ; † June 23, 1981 in Bombay , Maharashtra ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) .

Life

SK Patil, who attended St. Xavier's College in Bombay , joined Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1920 and worked as a teacher until 1924. He then studied newspaper science at the London School of Economics (LSE) and at University College London (UCL) at the University of London . After his return he became involved in the fight against the colonial power in British India and was arrested eight times by the British authorities for this reason in the following years. In 1928 he became a member of the Executive Board (Congress Committee) of the INC in the Bombay Presidency and between 1929 and 1946 its Secretary General, before he became President of the INC in the Bombay Presidency in 1946. After India's independence, he was Mayor of Bombay between 1949 and 1952 .

In 1951 Patil became chairman of the Film Inquiry Committee , on the basis of which the National Film Award was introduced in 1954 and the National Film Funding Corporation FFC ( Film Finance Corporation ) was founded in 1960 . In the 1952 election he was first elected a member of the Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian parliament, for the Indian National Congress (INC) . In this he represented until his defeat by George Fernandes in the election from February 15 to 21, 1967, in what is now Gujarat's constituency Banaskantha . He was also president of the Indo-German Friendship Society and visited the Federal Republic of Germany in 1955 .

After the death of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on May 27, 1964, he belonged to a group of influential congressional politicians from non- Hindi states known as the "Syndicate". Shortly thereafter, he took over on June 9, 1964 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri the post of Minister of Railways , which he took on January 24, 1966 in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi . On March 13, 1967, however, he was replaced by CM Poonacha in the course of a recent cabinet reshuffle . The Indira Gandhi-critical “Syndicate” also included K. Kamaraj , the former Chief Minister of Madras , Neelam Sanjiva Reddy , Congress Party leader and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh , S. Nijalingappa , the Chief Minister of Mysore and Atulya Ghosh , leader of the Congress in West Bengal , which had significant influence within the INC on the election from February 15 to 21, 1967.

After an internal party dispute, Sadoba Patil founded the Indian National Congress (Organization) in 1969 together with the so-called "Syndicate" . The INC (O) nominated Neelam Sanjiva Reddy for the presidential election on August 16, 1969 , who, however, was narrowly defeated by VV Giri . Within the INC (O), he spoke with Nijalingappa, unlike Kamaraj, against the nationalization of banks by the Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Ordinance .
