Saint Clement ( Jèrriais : St Cliément) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey . The municipality is located in the southeast of the island. It covers 2440 vergées (4 km², 4% of the land area of ​​Jersey) and is the smallest of the Jersey municipalities in terms of area. In turn, this means that their population density is second only to St. Helier .

Neighboring communities are Saint Savior in the west and northwest, in the north and northeast it borders on Grouville . In the south, the municipality has a border on the Bay of St. Aubin (English: St. Aubin's Bay), which extends from Le Dicq to the port of La Rocque. Due to the border with St. Helier, the community in the west is heavily urbanized and structurally has the characteristics of a suburb .

Much of the municipal area is below the tidal line and was often flooded before the Le Dicq dam was built. Large floods of 1688, 1796 and 1812 tore z. B. removed the coastal road and led to the fact that it had to be built further inland. For this reason, parts of the forests that used to be there are still conserved below sea level in the mudflat area off St. Clement in Greve d'Azette.

In 1172 there were reports of a chapel and a parish already existed there. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was believed that the church was a center of witchcraft and witches to their Sabbath on Fridays on the Rocque Mountain (now known as Witches Rock , German  Hexenberg ) träfen.

The Seymour Tower , also built in 1792 for coastal defense, is about three kilometers off the coastline and is on one of the largest tidal reefs in the world. This tower can be rented as an overnight place under special conditions.

The dolmens of Mont Ubé are believed to have originated from the pre-Celtic Iberian people around 3000 BC. Were created. The remains of a cemetery on La Motte (Green Island) are believed to come from later years of settlement. Neolithic Cairns were also discovered during his investigations.

Samarès Manor ( Jèrriais : Mangni d'Sanmathès ), a mansion in the Vingtaine de Samarès with original medieval parts, is the traditional residence of the Seigneur de Samarès . The garden of Samarès Manor is designed as a botanical garden and is open to the public. The name Samarès stands for an old French word thatmeans salt marsh or marshland and thus the type of soil that is (or was) predominantly located here in the low-lying areas.

The municipality is divided into three parts ( vingtaines ):

St. Clement forms an electoral district and elects two MPs.

All parishes in Jersey, including Saint Clement, have an honorary police force made up of volunteer members who have certain rights organized in a police-like manner.

The seat of the local government is the Parish Hall in Le Hocq . The building is the newest ward building in Jersey's twelve parishes.

There is a partnership with Cancale in Brittany ( France ).

Churches

Personalities

After the coup by Napoleon III. In 1851, against which he had rebelled, Victor Hugo was exiled and settled in the then exclusively French-speaking Jersey, namely in Marina Terrace in St. Clement. He wrote a collection of poems Les Châtiments ( punishments ) here in 1853 . The Connétable of St. Clement arranged for Hugo to be expelled because he had expressed criticism of the British royal family in his letters. Hugo left Jersey after three years and settled in Guernsey before returning to France in 1871.
