Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the Laurentides administrative region , around 40 km northwest of Montreal . Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines belongs to the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) Thérèse-De Blainville , has an area of 92.81 km² and has 14,535 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines is located in the Rive-Nord region in relatively flat, partly forested terrain at the foot of the Laurentine Mountains . Several streams drain the plain in an easterly direction to the Rivière Mascouche , a tributary of the Rivière des Mille Îles . Neighboring municipalities are Sainte-Sophie in the north, Terrebonne in the east, Blainville in the south and Mirabel in the west.
history
In 1673 the French King Louis XIV created the Seigneurie Terrebonne. The first colonists settled in what is now the urban area around 1731. In 1787 the parish of Sainte-Anne-de-Mascouche was founded, which was renamed Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines in 1816. The place name refers to St. Anna and the location on a plain. The community was founded in 1845 and received city status in 1987. The Canadian Pacific Railway opened a branch line in 1877, which was closed in 1963. The place has always been characterized by agriculture, especially the cultivation of strawberries . The city has been a member of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal association since 2000 .

According to the 2011 census, Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines had 14,535 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 156.6 inh / km². 96.1% of the population stated French as their main language, while English made up 1.3%. 0.5% said they were bilingual (French and English), other languages and multiple answers accounted for 2.1%. Only French spoke 68.2%. In 2001, 93.8% of the population were Roman Catholic , 2.6% Protestant and 3.5% non-denominational.
Transport and economy
Saint-Anne-des-Plaines is a bit off the main arteries. Various roads provide connections to the surrounding towns. The CIT Laurentides company operates two bus routes to Laval and Sainte-Thérèse . The autobahns Autoroute 640 and Autoroute 15 are each around ten kilometers away.
A little outside of town is a prison complex owned by the state correctional organization Correction Canada , one of the largest of its kind in Canada. The complex comprises a prison of the low and medium security level as well as the Special Handling Unit , a maximum security prison.
