Salah ad-Din ( Arabic صلاح الدين, DMG Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn ) is a governorate in northern Iraq .
Salah ad-Din has around 1,146,500 inhabitants on an area of 24,751 km² (status: 2003). The capital is Tikrit , but the largest city is Samarra . In 1958, the governorate was part of the Baghdad governorate, but then divided and the northern part named after the city of Samarra. Later the name was changed to Salah ad-Din ( Saladin ).
