Salamon János Petényi (born July 30, 1799 in Ábelová , Neograd County , Austrian Empire ; † October 5, 1855 in Pest , Austrian Empire) was a Hungarian Lutheran pastor and zoologist.

Life

Salamon János Petényi's father was a Lutheran pastor in the Slovak-speaking village of Ábelfalva. He studied Protestant theology in Pozsony and Vienna . In 1826 he passed his exams and was pastor in Cinkota (part of today's Budapest ) until 1833 .

However, he was interested in natural science, ornithology and paleontology . He therefore initially worked on the side in the natural history collection of the Hungarian National Museum . In 1834 he became a curator and subsequently curator at the National Museum and its zoological collection. He is considered the founder of ornithology in Hungary. In 1846, Petényi became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .

Petényi's contributions were rarely published during his lifetime. The naturalist Ferenc Kubinyi took over his estate in the National Museum, but it was largely lost after his death. Kubiny in 1864 and Titusz Csörgey in 1898 and 1905 published writings from the estate.

The first description of the steppe mouse , Mus spicilegus Petényi , in 1882, by Petényi. In 1847 his friend Johann Jacob Heckel named the species Barbus petenyi from the genus Barben after him.
