Salomon van Til

Salomon van Til , also: Till , (* December 28, 1643 in Weesp ; † October 31, 1713 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of the craftsman and elder of the Reformed community Johannes van Til († 1678) and his wife Barbara le Grand grew up in a Reformed environment. His father, who himself became a pastor in Broek on Langedijk and Zuid-Scharwoude, had cherished the wish that his son might also take up the parish profession. For this he attended the Latin school in Alkmaar . He began studying at the University of Utrecht , where he first attended the lectures of the orientalist Johann Leusden . He later completed theological studies with Gisbert Voetius , Andreas Essenius and Frans Burman . He was particularly drawn to Burman, who took the point of view of René Descartes and Johannes Coccejus . However, a speech impediment induced him to devote himself to studying medicine. At Burman's persuasion, he returned to theology and continued his studies at the University of Leiden , where he enrolled on September 23, 1664.

Here he attended the lectures of Coccejus, Johannes Hoornbeek , Abraham Heidanus and Jacobus Golius . At that time he got into a dispute with his orthodox father, who warned him about Coccejus and forbade the purchase of his books. After studying in Leiden in 1666 he became pastor in Huisduinen , where he continued to study the Bible for eleven years. The theological debates of his time did not pass him by either. After the restoration of the governorship of the Orange in 1672, Til was ousted from his office. So he resumed his medical studies in order to be able to make a living. But soon he appeared again as a preacher and was able to acquire such a reputation that he was able to take over a pastor's position in Rijp in 1676 and in 1682 switched to a pastor's position in Medemblik . At the beginning of 1683 he became a pastor in Dordrecht , in 1684 he took over a professorship in church history and philology at the Illustren Schule, which position he took up with the speech De officio magistratus erga scholas et gymnasia atque eos, qui studiorum patrocinia pro viribus suscipiunt (Amsterdam 1684).

On May 6, 1702 the curators of the Leiden University appointed him professor of theology, on June 13, 1702 he received an honorary doctorate in theology from the Senate of the Leiden University, and on June 16, 1702 he took up the office with the speech qua exitus Ecclesiae Reformatae ex Babylone spirituali justificatur et a Schismatis crimine liberatur . His lectures dealt with the prophetic writings of the Old Testament, the federal theology of Coccejus and homiletics . His lectures were widely viewed. In his capacity as a university lecturer in Leiden, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the educational institution and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1704/05 . In 1710 he suffered a stroke, as a result of which he was paralyzed and lost memory. Three years later he was redeemed from that state by death.

Van Til was an opponent of strife and discord within the Reformed Dutch Church, as is evident from his work Salems vreede in Liefde, Trouw en Waarheit (Dortrecht 1680, etc.). As a representative of a moderate theological way of thinking, he recognized the law of reason in the field of theology, but also clearly distinguished the theology naturalis from the theology revelata. For for him the divine revelation was the only source, as can be seen from his work Theologiae utriusque, cum Nauralis tum Revelatae compendium (Leiden 1704). Especially the prophetic writings of the Old Testament as well as the oriental languages have been his main fields and as an excellent pulpit speaker he had gained an excellent reputation in his day.

Van Til was married twice. His first marriage was on June 28, 1666 with Maria van Tethrode († 1697). His second marriage was on June 17, 1697 with Agatha Catharina Molenschot († 1708). One of the children we know is the daughter Maria van Til, who married the pastor in Burgh Benjamin van Hess. The daughter Barbara van Til married the police officer of Raamsdonk Jeronymus Jacob van Thulden. The son Jan Rochus van Til entered the Dutch civil service and became ambassador in Lisbon and Cologne.
