Salvatore Licitra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salvatore Licitra (born August 10, 1968 in Bern , Switzerland ; † September 5, 2011 in Catania , Italy ) was an Italian tenor . Many music lovers already saw him as a kind of “successor” to the Italian star tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who died in 2007 .

Life

In 1970 his parents returned to Italy from Switzerland. Licitra started out as a graphic artist because he initially had doubts whether his vocal skills were sufficient for the profession of singer. He studied singing at the Accademia Verdiana in Parma and made his debut at the Teatro Regio there in 1998 as Gustavo in Un ballo in maschera , a role he sang again in the same year in the Arena di Verona . Here he subsequently sang roles such as Pinkerton ( Madama Butterfly ) , Radamès ( Aida ) and Manrico ( Il trovatore ) . In 1999 he appeared for the first time as Don Alvaro ( La forza del destino ) at La Scala in Milan . There he also sang Manrico in the new production of Il trovatore at the beginning of the 2000 season. The conductor Riccardo Muti engaged Licitra, but deleted the high C from the aria Di quella pira . The audience was disappointed and booed. Six months later Licitra sang the aria in Verona with two high Cs and then had to give encores because the audience kept wanting to hear his high notes.

In spring 2002 he stepped in for the indisposed Luciano Pavarotti at the New York Metropolitan Opera two hours before the performance . His debut as Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at this house meant his international breakthrough. He received a standing ovation for his performance, especially for the arias Recondita armonia and E lucevan le stelle .

In the first quarter of 2001 he recorded solo pieces on CD, which served as music for the film In stormy times . In addition to his CD The Debut , which later appeared under the title E lucevan le stelle , several DVDs were also produced with him in various operatic roles.

With Marcelo Álvarez he recorded the CD / DVD Duetto , a compilation of songs specially composed for the two tenors and a few operatic arias ( E lucevan le stelle as a solo by Licitra). The music was recorded during a concert at the Colosseum in Rome . Later there was another gig in New York. The duet Odissea contains eight high Cs, which both singers mastered with flying colors.

Salvatore Licitra was cautious about television appearances and CD recordings.

Accident in Sicily

On August 27, 2011 Licitra drove a scooter into a wall near Ragusa on the island of Sicily as a result of a stroke while driving . He did not wear a helmet and suffered serious injuries to his skull, face and chest; his passenger was only slightly injured. On the same day Licitra was operated on in the Garibaldi Hospital in Catania , but died on September 5, 2011 from his injuries.
