history

The place was first mentioned in the year 1053, when a Ranieri in the (no longer existing) castle Castello della Sambuca made a document that the Badia a Passignano ( Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo , today also a district of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa) goods sent. Further documents were made in the castle on September 11, 1166 and October 29, 1179, the latter also mentioning the Ponte della Sambuca bridge . The church Canonica di Santa Maria e San Jacopo was first mentioned on June 26, 1219 and in 1231 described as subordinate to the Abbey of Passignano. The Borgo , i.e. the houses near the church, were built in the first years of the 14th century, whereby the Borgo del Ponte della Sambuca was mentioned as early as 1295. Until 1892 Sambuca Val di Pesa belonged to Barberino Val d'Elsa, then the place became part of the new municipality of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

  • Chiesa dei Santi Maria e Jacopo alla Sambuca , church in the center, which was first mentioned in 1219 and is subordinate to the Pieve of San Pietro in Bossolo (just outside the center of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa). Probably made at the will of the Buondelmonti family from Florence. Was restored several times between 1590 and 1826. Due to the persistent problems with the statics, a complete new building (except for a few wall elements) was started in 1953 and completed three years later.
  • Ponte di Ramagliano , also called Ponte Romagnano or Ponte della Sambuca , historical bridge over the Pesa. First documented in 1179 and renewed by the Florence government in 1415. The bridge was enlarged in 1843. The bridge was badly damaged in World War II and rebuilt in 1947. The bridge name comes from a mill called Romagliano , which was documented in December 1314.
  • Cappella di Sant'Anna , chapel on the bridge. Includes a tabernacle with fresco Sant'Anna con la Vergine e il Bambino (15th century).
  • Cappella di San Giovanni Gualberto , chapel dedicated to Johannes Gualbertus on the Pesa approx. 1 km southeast of the town center near the Mulino dell'Abate mill . The current chapel was built in 1856 on the site of an older chapel (17th century), the altarpiece of San Giovanni Gualberto in preghiera visitato dalla luce divina by Giovanni Battista Caccini dates from the same year.
  • Cappella di San Lazzaro , chapel with tabernacle of the saint above the village on the SP 94. Was built on the spot where the Ospedale di San Lazzero , documented from the 13th century, stood. This was decommissioned at the end of the 18th century and later demolished. The La Resurrezione di Lazzaro tabernacle was created in 2009 by Sergio Nardoni.
  • Ponte Nuovo , bridge over the Pesa from the late 18th century on the SP 94, approx. 500 m north of the historic town center.
