San Donato in Poggio is a fraction (Italian frazione ) of Barberino Tavarnelle in the metropolitan city of Florence , Tuscany region in Italy .
geography
The place is about 6 km southeast of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and 26 km south of the provincial capital (metropolitan city) Florence in the western part of the Chianti fiorentino shortly southwest of the river Pesa in the Pesatal (Val di Pesa) near the watershed of the Pesa and Elsa . The place is at 418 m and has about 800 inhabitants. The district of Barberino Val d'Elsa is approx. 5.5 km to the west, the district of Sambuca Val di Pesa (also belongs to Barberino Tavarnelle) is approx. 5 km to the north, the municipality of Castellina in Chianti is approx. 8 km to the southeast and the municipality Poggibonsi about 10 km southwest.
history
The place was first mentioned in 989 as San Donato in loco Pocie in a document of the Badia a Passignano ( Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo , today part of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa). Then the Pieve is mentioned in 1038, when Boniface of Canossa confirmed the church of San Piero a Ema ( Ponte a Ema , today part of Bagno a Ripoli ) to the Uberto Abate of the Basilica San Miniato al Monte (Florence) . The place as a Borgo is first documented in 1090 as burgi apud ecclesiam S. Donati in Pocis . In 1176 San Donato in Poggio was the place of negotiation for a peace treaty between the Republic of Siena and that of Florence. Half of the place was in 1191 by Heinrich VI. awarded to the count family of the Count Guido di Modigliana of the Guidi . Florence controlled the place from 1218. In the run-up to the Battle of Montaperti (1260), the Fiorentines camped in the village in order to get to Montaperti from there. After the defeat of Florence, San Donato in Poggio was attacked by Siena and badly damaged. The peace negotiations between the two republics also took place here. In 1313, shortly before his death, the place was taken by Emperor Henry VII . The place then initially belonged to Barberino Val d'Elsa. When Tavarnelle Val di Pesa split off as an independent municipality from Barberino on May 1, 1893, San Donato in Poggio became part of the new municipality of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. With the municipality merger of Barberino Val d'Elsa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa on January 1, 2019, the place became a fraction of the new municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle.

- Chiesa della Madonna della Neve , church in the town center. The facade dates from the 14th century. Contains the work Madonna col Bambino tra San Simeone e San Taddeo , which is dated to 1413.
- Palazzo Malaspina , formerly also used as Palazzo Pretorio , was formerly called Palazzo Ticci .
- Palazzo Pretorio , is on the opposite side of the piazza opposite the Madonna della Neve church. Contains the 14th century fresco Madonna col Bambino e Santi .
- Porta Fiorentina , northern city gate.
- Porta Senese , southern city gate.
- Torre Campanaria , defense tower of the city walls from the 12th century near the Porta Fiorentina.
- Museo Emilio Ferrari della Cultura Contadina , Tuscan artisan museum in the town center. Was created in 2001 and was named after Emilio Ferrari (1915–1990).
- Cinema e Società Filarmonica Giuseppe Verdi . Made in 1926 and restored in 1986. Located a few meters outside the city walls in Via Senese . The hall has about 200 seats.
- Pieve di San Donato in Poggio , Pieve just outside the city walls, which was documented as early as 989. Contains a triptych by Giovanni del Biondo from 1375 and a baptismal font by Giovanni della Robbia (son of Andrea della Robbia ) from 1513. The panel painting Santa Lucia, Santa Maria Maddalena e San Donato by Bicci di Lorenzo comes from here , which is now in the Museo Diocesano di Santo Stefano al Ponte in Florence.
- Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie a Pietracupa , sanctuary approx. 1 km southeast of San Donato in Poggio. Contains works by Paolo Schiavo (1397–1478), Domenico Cresti and Cosimo Gamberucci (1562–1621).

The local football club San Donato Tavarnelle played in the fourth-rate Serie D in the 2014/2015 season .
