Samuel Engel
Samuel Engel (born December 2, 1702 in Bern ; † March 26, 1784 ibid ) was a Swiss librarian , geographer , politician , philanthropist and economist .
Life
After a notary's examination , he first worked in state administration and was chief librarian from 1736 to 1748 . 1745 he was appointed to the Grand Council voted was 1748 bis 1754 proconsul in Aarberg and 1760 bis 1765 in Echallens . In addition, he wrote numerous treatises on agronomy , grain supply , forestry and the economical use of wood . As bailiff he set up experimental fields, introduced potato cultivation and afforestation and promoted peat extraction .
Engel also wrote geographical treatises, such as the possibility of a northeast passage . From his wide network of correspondents , he was most closely connected to his cousin Albrecht von Haller .
