Samuel Gottlieb von Vogel (born March 14, 1750 in Erfurt , † January 19, 1837 in Rostock ) was a German medic . He is considered the father of the German seaside resort .

Life

Vogel began his medical studies in Göttingen at the age of 14, received his doctorate in 1771 and completed his habilitation in 1776. He was a member of the ZN student order . First he practiced as a doctor in Göttingen, later in Ratzeburg as a country physician for the Principality of Ratzeburg (from 1780) and from 1783 also for the Duchy of Lauenburg . He published several medicine books.

In 1789 he was appointed professor of the medical faculty at the University of Rostock . In 1793 he convinced the Mecklenburg Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin of the healing power of a seaside resort , after which the Heiligendamm seaside resort was founded.

Vogel carried the Mecklenburg title of Privy Councilor and was awarded the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle , 3rd class. In 1834, when he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown, he was elevated to the Bavarian nobility.

As early as 1800 he was accepted into the Masonic Lodge Temple of Truth in Rostock; at times he was their master of the chair . In 1808 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , in 1822 a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, and in 1826 a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
