Samuel Louis Kaplan (born June 3, 1936 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American diplomat and since 2009 Ambassador of the United States to King Mohammed VI. of Morocco .

Life

Kaplan graduated from the University of Minnesota with a law degree . He is a member of the Order of the Coif, Phi Delta Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma compounds . In 1960 he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration . He was admitted to the bar in the same year. Kaplan was Associate Editor from 1958 to 1959 and President of the Minnesota Law Review from 1959 to 1960 . From 1960 to 1963 he was a tutor . In 1974 Kaplan was a lecturer at the University of Minnesota Law School . In 1978 he founded a law firm in Minnesota, Kaplan Strangis & Kaplan Public Attorney, with Sheldon Kaplan, Ralph Strangis and Harvey F. Kaplan . He is a member of the Hennepin County Bar Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association .

According to the Center for Responsive Politics , Kaplan raised between $ 100,000 and $ 200,000 for Barack Obama's campaign for the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party . On June 19, 2009, Obama announced his intention to send Kaplan as ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco . On August 4, 2009, Kaplan was sworn in to succeed Thomas T. Riley . In his speech in Cairo on June 4, 2009, Barack Obama noted that Sultan Yazid of Morocco was the first government to recognize the US government in 1787, as Kaplan pointed out in his presentation to the United States Senate .
