Samuel de Sousa Leão Gracie

Samuel de Sousa Leão Gracie CBE (born November 11, 1891 in Botafogo , † March 2, 1967 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian diplomat and acting foreign minister.

Life

Samuel de Souza Leão Gracie was the son of Maria Luiza de Souza and Samuel Gracie. His sister was Carolina de Souza Leão Gracie (born December 21, 1885, Rio de Janeiro). He married Miriam Hime de Sousa Leão Gracie on January 11, 1915 in Rio de Janeiro; they had three daughters.

De Sousa came after his training in the foreign service and was first as a counselor in London and from 1921 as charge d'affaires in Asunción used. From 1923 he worked as a delegation secretary in Washington, DC , where he was also taken over as chargé d'affaires in 1925. From September 16, 1931 to April 6, 1934 de Sousa was appointed as envoy to La Paz and then until April 13, 1935 as envoy extraordinary and ministre plénipotentiaire first to Vienna , then from April 23, 1938 to March 28 1939 to Budapest , from April 2, 1939 to November 1, 1939 to Stockholm and finally to Santiago de Chile from January 25, 1940 to January 10, 1946 . In 1946, de Sousa was appointed Secretary General in the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, where he was acting Foreign Minister from July 24, 1946 to December 7, 1946.

From June 17, 1947 to November 4, 1952, he was Ambassador to Lisbon and then until November 10, 1956 as Ambassador to the Court of St James’s . During his time in London, de Sousa represented the Brazilian government at the coronation of Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953 .
