San Andrés de Machaca is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

location

San Andrés de Machaca is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Andrés de Machaca in the province of Ingavi . San Andrés de Machaca is located at an altitude of 3948  m in the wide plain of the Río Desaguadero , 45 kilometers south of Lake Titicaca .

geography

San Andrés de Machaca lies between the mountain ranges of the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central in the Andean dry climate of the Altiplano with an average annual rainfall of around 500 mm (see Nazacara climate diagram). The region has a distinct daytime climate, with mean temperatures fluctuating more during the day than during the year.

The mean average temperature of the region is 9 ° C, the monthly mean temperatures fluctuate only insignificantly between 5 ° C in July and 10 ° C in December, the monthly precipitation is between under 10 mm from May to August and 100 to 125 mm in January and February .

Transport network

San Andrés de Machaca is located at a distance of 136 kilometers by road southwest of the capital of the department, La Paz .

From La Paz the paved road Ruta 2 leads west to El Alto , from there the Ruta 19 another 23 kilometers to the southwest to Viacha . Here the unpaved Ruta 43 branches off in a south-westerly direction and reaches San Andrés de Machaca via Nazacara after 89 kilometers . The road then continues via Santiago de Machaca to Hito IV on the Peruvian border.

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of San Andrés 94.4 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
