Sanak Island is a small uninhabited island of the Fox Islands belonging to the Aleutian Islands , which in turn belong to the US state of Alaska . The approximately 21 km long island is located in the west of the Fox Islands.
The island was an insignificant base for the American armed forces during World War II . War material left behind, shipwrecks and the abandoned Pauloff Harbor settlement are still mute witnesses of past human existence. Today the island is occasionally visited by the indigenous people of the Aleutians to hunt or fish the wild herds of cattle native to the island. In addition to cattle, various species of birds, sea otters and horses live on Sanak .
On the now uninhabited island, archaeologists have found remains of human habitation dating back to 5600 BC. Go back BC.
