The sand evening primrose ( Oenothera oakesiana ), also called Oake's evening primrose or coastal evening primrose , is a species of the evening primrose genus ( Oenothera ) within the evening primrose family (Onagraceae). In Central Europe it is a neophyte from North America.

The sand evening primrose is a biennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. A leaf rosette is formed in the first year . The stem is covered with protruding hairs ( indument ) and spotted red. The leaves are light green, lanceolate and somewhat indented in the lower half on the edge.

The flowering period extends from June to September. The apex of the inflorescence is slightly nodding before opening. The flower buds are first green, then reddish. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and four-fold with a double flower envelope . The four sepals are covered with protruding hairs ( trichomes ). The calyx lobes are 2 to 3 mm long. The four petals are 16 mm long and just as wide. The ovary is covered with protruding glandular hairs.

The capsule fruit is 25 to 35 mm long, closely covered with hair and has blunt fruit teeth.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

The sand evening primrose in Germany seldom occurs in southern Baden , southern Hesse and in Saxony-Anhalt . In Central Europe , it settles on embankments , sand fields and ruderal sites .
