Sandra Leupold (* in the 20th century in Berlin ) is a Swiss-German director .

Life

Leupold is the daughter of Franca Leupold Cedraschi (* 1938) from Chur . After graduating from high school, she first studied musicology with Carl Dahlhaus at the TU Berlin and then opera directing a. a. with Peter Konwitschny and Ruth Berghaus at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin . As a personal director she worked with George Tabori , Hans Neuenfels , Jürgen Rose and Karl-Ernst Herrmann .

Her production of Mozart's Don Giovanni , which she brought out at the Kulturbrauerei Berlin as "dramma giocoso in 2 acts for 8 singers, 7 chairs and orchestra", was performed in 2001. She then staged at other opera houses in German-speaking countries. In addition to the repertoire, she also devotes herself to baroque opera and new music . The Foundation Archive of the Academy of the Arts Berlin has been documenting its productions since 2006 . In the 2013 summer semester, Leupold was the holder of the international and interdisciplinary Klara Marie Faßbinder visiting professorship for women and gender studies , which is supported by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

She has been nominated thirteen times for her performances by the specialist magazine Opernwelt in the categories "Director" / "Young artist" / "Performance" and "Production of the year". As the first ever female opera director, she was awarded the Faust Theater Prize for her production of Don Carlo at the Lübeck Theater, which recognizes artists whose work is groundbreaking for German theater. In 2018 she received the audience award for her production of Die Zauberflöte at the Erfurt Theater.

The archive of the Akademie der Künste (Berlin) has been systematically documenting Leupold's productions since 2006 and honors the director with the establishment of a Sandra Leupold archive in 2020.
