Sandstone is a city in Pine County , Minnesota , United States . In 2010, Sandstone had 2849 residents. The Banning State Park is near. Most residents travel to nearby Pine City to shop or get services .
The name of the settlement in the language of the Ojibwe is Asinikaaning and means at the stone breaking place ; it owes this name to the sandstone quarry located on the outskirts of the city. The railway contractor JJ Hill had many of the sandstone buildings that still exist today built.
There is a federal prison in Sandstone with around 1,300 inmates.
