Sanica

Sanica ( Cyrillic  Саница ) is a municipality north of Ključ in the canton of Una-Sana in Bosnia and Herzegovina . The name of the place comes from the river Sanica ("little Sana"), whose source is in the area of the municipality and which flows into the Sana .

history

In 1942, Yugoslavia's first youth labor brigade was set up in Sanica .

Before the 1992–1995 war , the population of the local community Sanica was 6771 (1991 census). Of these, 61.88 percent described themselves as Bosniaks , 36.44 percent as Serbs , 0.96 percent as Yugoslavs and 0.72 percent as belonging to other groups. The ethnic distribution in the villages was different, with mostly clear Serbian or Bosniak majorities. 1526 Bosniaks, 641 Serbs, 4 Croats, 50 Yugoslavs and 20 others lived in the main town of Sanica.

In the 1992–1995 war, Sanica was initially taken by Bosnian Serbs. In the course of the so-called ethnic cleansing , almost all Muslim / Bosniak residents were expelled. Hundreds were murdered and some of them buried in mass graves. More than 340 men were taken to the Manjača camp.

After the place was retaken by the army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in September 1995 and a relative security was later guaranteed by the Dayton Treaty , only Bosniaks returned. Meanwhile, some Serbs are living in Sanica again. A Serbian Orthodox church building was also rebuilt in Gornja Sanica .

economy

Former wood processing factory

From 1959 to the end of 2008 there was a plywood and veneer factory with a sawmill in Sanica, which at times had more than 1,000 employees and was therefore the most important employer. After the production break caused by the war in 2002, the company was privatized and partially repaired. However, it was closed in December 2008. Therefore, the economic situation in Sanica is difficult. There is high unemployment. Agriculture plays a role in self-sufficiency.

Community structure

The municipality of Sanica includes the villages of Međeđe Brdo, Korjenovo, Donja Sanica, Pištanica, Gornji Biljani, Donji Biljani, Donja Prisjeka, Gornja Prisjeka, Gologlavo, Gornji Budelj, Mijačica, Zavolje, Vrelo and Gornja Sanica.

tourism

Before the war, Sanica was a popular holiday destination because of the beautiful landscape of the Grmeč Mountains and the waters. In 1974, on the initiative of citizens from Gornja Sanica, the first "tourist village" in Bosnia and Herzegovina was declared. Until 1975, Sanica could also be reached by train ( Steinbeisbahn , Prijedor - Lička Kaldrma line ). Parts of the former railway line are now designated as a mountain bike route. One event that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year is the "Grmeč Koride", a bullfighting competition. Hunting and fishing tourism also plays a role.
