The Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV (SGSW) is a non-profit aid organization from Baden-Württemberg . As the oldest still existing organization of demo paramedics ( English street medics , riot medics or action medics ) in Germany , it specializes primarily in the medical service protection of meetings and demonstrations . After it was founded, it introduced professionalization (standards for training, material and labeling) in medical care at demonstrations and continues to shape the image of demo paramedics in Germany to this day. The non-profit association is mainly active in the greater Stuttgart area , where it is also based. For larger events his forces can but in the entire federal territory are encountered.

Principles & self-image

The Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV expresses its self-image in the form of 6 principles to which its paramedics feel obliged:

The Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV feels particularly committed to human rights (especially freedom of assembly ) and sees itself as a cross-spectrum organization independent of parties and authorities. She is convinced that all people have an inviolable high value, whose dignity wants to be recognized indiscriminately through their help. The South-West medical group recognizes naturopathic , conservative, holistic and traditional medical procedures. In order to increase the trust and the adherence of their patients, the Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV usually treats anonymously . It rejects any form of discrimination and treats all people regardless of skin color , origin , gender , sexual orientation , economic situation or other individual differences.

Areas of activity

The Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV sees its area of responsibility in securing meetings in accordance with the Assembly Act ( demonstrations , rallies ), which it has specialized in materially and in terms of training. In addition, the paramedics secure non-commercial cultural events, especially concerts and festivals, and conduct medical educational work. According to the organization, they are closing a supply gap, since many organizers of political meetings, but also alternative cultural projects, cannot afford medical services that are subject to a fee . Culture should not fail because of money and everyone should be able to exercise their basic right to freedom of assembly as safely as possible.

Since 2018, the organization has also had a group for psychosocial emergency care (PSNV) .

history

In the spring of 1997, the Middle Neckar Citizens' Initiative (BBMN), which u. a. organized the protests against the 3rd Castor transport to Gorleben , raising awareness of the need for medical care for the injured during the actions. Therefore, a paramedic from their ranks was assigned to form a group to ensure this care. During the actions against the transport of nuclear waste, the group cared for numerous injured people and came into closer contact with the demonstrators, so that they recognized the general need for medical services at meetings.

Demonstration paramedics from the medical group in the Democratic Center in Ludwigsburg, wearing a red jacket and a rescue backpack, rinsing the eyes of a protester.

In the same year the group was able to establish initial contacts with autonomous paramedic groups. In the following year, the still small group grew considerably in the run-up to the Castor transport from Neckarwestheim to Ahaus and was also able to expand its equipment. So the group went into action in red ambulance jackets - a novelty in the medical service at demonstrations, where up to now a maximum of armbands have been used to identify the poorly recognizable demo paramedics.

The young medical group got its first office in the Democratic Center Ludwigsburg (Demoz), while it continued to professionalize. With their commitment, the paramedics were also separated from the demonstrators, who no longer took part directly in the protests. This also led to conflicts between existing and new groups, which, according to the color of their clothes, were divided into "red" (standard rescue service clothes) and "black" (dressed like demonstrators) (see also criticism & conflicts).

While the group changed its name several times, the color of the jackets changed to neon yellow. It operated in the meantime, a high-altitude rescue group for climbing actions ( Robin Wood , Greenpeace ) and presented with Volxküchen the physical supply on political activities safely. After the last founding member of the group left in 2013, a gradual restructuring took place, which resulted in the foundation of a non-profit association in 2017. In the meantime, the emergency services of the Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV are in action in bright red operational clothing. The seat of the association moved from Ludwigsburg to Stuttgart .

Logo & name

In the course of its history, the Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV changed its name several times. Founded as a “demo paramedic Ludwigsburg”, shortly afterwards it renamed itself “Medical group in the Democratic Center Ludwigsburg”. After a merger, the name was changed to “Sanitätsgruppe Rhein-Neckar / Ludwigsburg”. In 2003 it got its current name with "Sanitätsgruppe Südwest", but later changed the spelling.

The logo of the Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV also changed in the course of history. While the medical group initially used a changed Star of Life in red and white with the Aesculapian staff breaking through the edges and a red border, it changed its logo in 2015 after an out-of-court agreement with the Federal Association of Independent Rescue Services and Disaster Control (BKS) . Since then, the SGSW has used a red flower with a staff of Aesculapius, which is circled in red.

The current logo and the current name are protected by trademark law in the Federal Republic of Germany and may only be worn and used by members of the Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West eV in action for the organization.

Criticism & Conflicts

Especially in the early years there were numerous conflicts with demo paramedics who claimed to be autonomous . They repeatedly questioned the trustworthiness of the South West medical group and, as the "redjacket faction", accused it of corruption by the health system due to their professional approach . These autonomous groups contrasted the concept of a professional medical service with anonymous treatment, as represented by the South-West medical group, with a concept of medical self-organization by comrades and activists ( lay people ).

In December 2016, another sanitation group posted on Twitter that they would not treat "cops" as a matter of principle. The group later added that they only treat "bad people" in emergencies. A few days later, the South-West medical group distanced itself from this statement and made it clear: "We treat every person who needs medical help."

In October 2018, the Süd-West e. V. in a press release the use of a vehicle crew of the DRK local association Kandel and threw them u. a. partisan behavior. The Kandel local association responded with a complaint that was later discontinued by the public prosecutor's office , as there was no public interest in prosecution.

From the right- wing political spectrum, the criticism can be heard that the Sanitätsgruppe Süd-West e. V. would act as "medical storm troops" of the anti-fascist action , which this rejects and points to the wide range of topics and organizers of the meetings and cultural events that were secured in the past.
