Demo paramedics , also demosanis or demonstration paramedics , are volunteers with medical training who take on medical services during protests and demonstrations (demosanity service). You can in groups be merged.

job

The task of the demo paramedics is to ensure initial medical care at meetings. During their missions they sometimes wear protective clothing such as helmets and breathing masks in order to protect themselves e.g. B. to protect against projectiles or pepper spray. In a ruling in 2018, the Berlin Regional Court permitted the wearing of protective equipment, as the demo paramedics are not to be considered as participants in the meeting and therefore the equipment is not affected by the ban on protective weapons and masking. Most of the time, the demo paramedics can be recognized by potential patients and the police through their orange vests or rescue service-like clothing. In Germany, the paramedics usually operate in teams of two to six people. After initial care, the injured are handed over to the public rescue service, if necessary, or transferred to outpatient or inpatient medical care in another way. Some groups are financed through donations and solidarity events.

history

Street Medics at the 2005 Anti-War Protests in Washington, DC

In the United States, groups called street medics first became active during the great civil rights movement demonstrations and the great anti-war demonstrations of the 1960s. They helped protests by the American Indian Movement (AIM), Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), the Young Lords Party , the Black Panther Party and other movements in the 1960s and 1970s.

During the protests against the ministerial conference of the economic and trade ministers of the WTO in Seattle in 1999 and in the vicinity of the World Social Forum , street medics helped the protesters. During these protests injuries from irritant gas, pepper spray, pepper bullets , lighthouse bullets , rubber bullets were treated and people were affected by the use of tasers and police dogs. Some organizations in the USA offer courses for everyone to become a certified street medic with different focuses.

Demo paramedics are on duty at many demonstrations in Germany. The nation's oldest, still active group is the Medical Group South-West eV It exists since March 1997. For larger protests as demonstrations against nuclear waste transports , in an activity of the end of terrain or against G8 and G20 meetings contributed numerous demo Paramedic Team First aid .

Logo dispute with DRK and BKS

The German Red Cross took legal action against demo paramedic groups and the Nadir platform in 2006 because of the logos used. These are too close to the international legal symbol Red Cross, which is enshrined in the Geneva Conventions . The sign shows a red cross, which turns into a red fist at the top. This fist was further interpreted as a "sign of violence", which runs counter to the purpose of protecting the Red Cross under international law. In 2015, the demo paramedics of the South-West medical group received a new logo after an out-of-court agreement with the Federal Association of Independent Rescue Services and Disaster Protection eV (BKS) .
