The Sankt-Agidius-Kirche is the parish church of the Catholic parish Wolfmannshausen, which is visible from afar because of its high tower ( Echterturm ), as an enclave in the Protestant surrounding area.

history

The parish was founded in 1488. The church was built in 1616 and expanded in 1954. The side altars were removed. An external renovation was carried out in 1996 and the interior in 1997.

Vestibule

After a few steps across the forecourt of the church, this is entered through a heavy wooden entrance door on the west side of the church. You are in an anteroom, from which a staircase leads to the left to the upper floors. The vestibule is separated from the interior by a glass door with a modern lead window showing the wise and foolish virgins .

Church interior

If you go through the door, you are initially under the organ gallery . The view of the impressive coffered ceiling in the Renaissance style is only released after a few steps towards the church center. The ceiling was built in 1616 and 1617 when the church was built.

altar

In the Gothic choir is the high altar from 1730. In the middle it shows the crucifixion of Christ . Above the conclusion is the Holy Trinity . On a pedestal at the top left is a statue of St. Kilian , the Franconian apostle . In the opposite on the right is the statue of the namesake of the church, St. Aegidius . In addition, St. Augustine (he holds a heart in his hand) and St. Ambrose , one of the church fathers , can be seen. Part of the altar is said to date from the time of the builder of the church, Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . This is also the namesake of the tower.

pulpit

Pulpit with Apostle's Cross (bottom right)

The pulpit is on the south side ( epistle side ) of the church. The judgment angel stands on the sound cover , and on the underside hangs the dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit . The pulpit is decorated with various figures. There are three of the four evangelists with their open gospels whose opening words are shown. The pulpit dates from the transition from baroque to rococo (early to mid-18th century). The color of the pulpit does not match the rest of the church. The high altar and organ prospect in particular need a new color scheme in this regard. Meanwhile the parish lacks the money.

On the right below the pulpit is an apostolic cross, which was uncovered again in 1997 , as a wall painting.

Statues on the walls

Many of the statues on the walls come from the former side altars (before 1954). On the south wall of the nave are the statues of the Good Shepherd (under the organ gallery), Saint Sebastian and Saint Peter .

One of the most important statues in the church is that of Saint Mary , Queen of Heaven. The statue is a baroque wooden figure from around 1725. It was originally attached to a wooden frame and was carried by the faithful during processions . The statue is said to come from the school of Tilman Riemenschneider . Today it adorns the northern gallery wall by the baptismal font.

organ

The organ was built in 1978. The instrument is a Jehmlich organ .

Baptismal font

Under the statue of St. Mary stands the modern baptismal font with the Holy Spirit above it. It was set up in 1954.

Outdoor area

On the cemetery wall, which delimits the large area around the church, there are fourteen stations of the cross from 1773 or 1778 and a war memorial that commemorates the fallen of the two world wars.
