Church of Saint Catherine

The Sankt-Katharinen-Kirche is the Protestant town church of the city of Wolmirstedt in Saxony-Anhalt . Today it is used as a Protestant community center. The terms St. Katharinen, Sankt-Katharina-Kirche and Stadtkirche Sankt-Katharina-und-Sankt-Pankratius are also used.

architecture

The church was built in the years 1876/77 in the neo-Gothic style according to designs by the district architect Schmidt . Finke is named as the site manager. The inauguration took place on December 7, 1877. Previously, the monastery church of the Cistercian convent Wolmirstedt , which was demolished between 1870 and 1875, had stood here.

The nave of the church has three aisles with a polygonal apse . On the west side there is the church tower with a very high point and little gnomes . Brick was used as the building material . Only the base and the borders of the doors and windows are made of stone .

inner space

The crucifix above the altar ( lime wood , painted) and the pulpit with sound cover were made in the workshop of the wood sculptor Gustav Kuntzsch , Wernigerode . On the pulpit there were half relief figures of Jesus , Peter , Paul , John and James in five fields .

Originally the interior of the church was provided with a gallery running around on three sides .

After a fire at Christmas 1973, the church could no longer be used. To save the church, the interior of the church was converted into a community center from 1976 to 1981. Several offices were created. The original design was largely lost. The previously existing neo-Gothic church stalls were moved to the Sankt-Peter-und-Paul-Kirche in Barleben in 1977/78 . A false ceiling was installed at the height of the gallery . Also, below the formerly open with truss executed roof structure a flat ceiling was added.

In the eastern part of the upper floor created in this way, a significantly shortened church interior with pointed arch arcades and slender bundle pillars has been preserved. In the polygon there is a star rib vault on service templates.

Furnishing

In the church there are still some pieces of equipment from the original monastery church, such as a late Gothic font in the shape of a chalice . There are also several incised tombstones , such as that of Abbess Richardis von Wardenberg , who died in 1311, and the tombstone of Otto von Irxleben (1402) and his wife Sophia (1415). Furthermore, there is also a sandstone - Epitaph of 1385 for Otto von Irxleben and his wife. On a relief both of them are shown kneeling under a crucifix in the costumes of their time with ribbon.

The crucifix has been preserved in the neo-Romanesque style ; Only the half relief figures of the pulpit still exist, which have not yet been included in the changed church design.
