Sansevieria aethiopica is a species of plant in the genus Sansevieria in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet aethiopica is derived from the Latin word aethiopicus for 'Ethiopian' and refers to the occurrence in Africa, which was called Ethiopia in the classical sense.

description

Sansevieria aethiopica grows stemless as a perennial, succulent plant with rhizomes about 1 centimeter thick . The 13 to 30 succulent leaves , arranged in rosettes, close together, are spread out in an ascending manner . The simple leaf blade is linear or linear-lanceolate with a length of 13 to 43 centimeters and a width of 1 to 2 centimeters. The top is concave and the base is sometimes slightly narrowed. Above the middle it turns into an awl, green and 1.6 to 2.5 millimeter long spade tip, which becomes narrowed and white. The leaves are initially provided with light transverse bands, otherwise dark green with bluish shading and a more or less glaucous surface. The spreading edge is red or whitish. The leaf surface is slightly rough.

The simple, spiked inflorescences are 35 to 75 centimeters high. The panicles are densely populated with four to six flowers per cluster. The ovate-lanceolate, pointed bract is 0.5 to 1 millimeter long. The flower stalk is up to 5 millimeters long. The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The bracts are white, sometimes purple to cream-colored. The flower tube is 2 to 3.5 inches long.

distribution

Sansevieria aethiopica is widespread in Kenya , Botswana , Namibia , Zimbabwe and in South Africa in the provinces of North Cape , Northwest , Eastern Cape and Gauteng in dry, open places or in bushland on permeable soils.
