Santa Maria Assunta (Clusone)
The Basilica Santa Maria Assunta ( Italian Basilica of the Assumption ) is a church in the Italian municipality of Clusone in the province of Bergamo , Lombardy . The church of the Diocese of Bergamo bears the patronage of the Assumption of Mary and Saint John the Baptist and has the rank of a minor basilica . The baroque church was built at the end of the 17th century.
history
The basilica was built between 1688 and 1698 on the northern side of the valley above Clusone to the design of Giovanni Battista Quadrio, an architect at the Duomo in Milan . It was consecrated on July 6, 1711 and in 1960 by Pope John XXIII. raised to the minor basilica.
architecture
The single-nave church with a barrel vault has a recessed choir with a semicircular apse . The nave is separated from the eight side chapels by sunken arches that rest on Corinthian columns, each 8.30 meters high. The church is 50 meters long, 18 meters wide and 20 meters high. The campanile next to the apse rises 66 meters high. In front of the facade, a portico with arches and columns looks onto a staircase. This is decorated with balustrades and four large statues of the evangelists .
Furnishing
The high altar was designed by Andrea Fantoni and made by the Corbarelli family from Brescia. Antonio Cifrondi created some works of art, such as the paintings of the medallions depicting the Last Judgment , the coronation of the Virgin Mary and Christ on the Mount of Olives , as well as the two paintings on the opposite facade depicting the baptism of Jesus and the Annunciation of the Baptist. The side chapels with their altars contain other valuable paintings and sculptures. The split organ was installed by the Ruffatti brothers on both sides of the choir in 1960. The stand-alone console on the left has three manuals and a pedal for 65 registers.
