Sasha Perera , also Mother Perera , (* 1979 in London ) is a British musician living in Berlin . She is the singer, MC, composer and lyricist of Jahcoozi and released four albums with this band. She also works as a DJ under the name Mother Perera and plays Future-Bass , UK Garage a . a. on.

Life

Sasha Perera was born in London and grew up there. Her parents migrated from Sri Lanka to Great Britain in the 1970s to avoid the civil war between Tamils and Sinhalese . Perera spent most of her childhood with her family in London, but for a few years in Singapore and temporarily in Malaysia. Accordingly, she attended school in Wimbledon and Singapore . She played guitar and trumpet as a child. Musically, it was shaped by the pirate stations that were very present in London in the 1990s , the Notting Hill Carnival and Jamaican culture as well as the dub music associated with it . For her, influential artists are Lee Scratch Perry , Horace Andy , Mad Professor and Mad Scientist as well as Massive Attack , Smith & Mighty , Roni Size , the Berlin musician Pole , the dub-tech label Rhythm & Sound and the Neue Deutsche Welle . She found the production methods of King Tubby , King Jammy and Joe Meek interesting .

Perera came to Cologne in 1999 via the Erasmus program to study a semester abroad. She finished her studies in German and European Political Science in 2000. During her stay abroad in Germany, she also traveled to Berlin. Perera decided in September 2000 to move there instead of returning to London, as living and renting were cheaper in Berlin. She still lives there today.

Sasha Perera attracts attention again and again with her extraordinary stage outfit, which shaped the style of Berlin's club culture ( alien queen style ). She enjoys cycling and, as a cosmopolitan person, travels a lot.
