The KG Saur Verlag was after the later director Klaus Gerhard Saur named German publishing house , based in Munich . Since 2006 he has been part of the De Gruyter publishing house as De Gruyter Saur .
history
The publishing house was originally founded in 1948 by Karl-Otto Saur and Margarethe Gringmuth as an engineering office for business and office organization, with its headquarters opposite the Deutsches Museum at the time . In 1954 the company was renamed Documentation of Technology and moved to Rosenheimer Strasse in Munich.
In 1963 Klaus Gerhard Saur joined the publishing house and the company moved to the neighboring Pullach in the Isar valley . After the death of the founder Karl-Otto Saur (1966), the company was renamed to Verlag Documentation Saur oHG and from now on it was run by his two sons Karl-Otto Saur junior and Klaus Gerhard Saur.
In 1972 Daniel Melcher from Charlottesville took part as a silent partner . Three years later, the company's headquarters were relocated to the Munich district of Solln . After the founding of KG Saur Inc. in New York and the Minerva publication Saur GmbH in 1977, the publisher was a year later in KG Saur Verlag renamed, in Paris the KG Saur Editeur SARL founded and in London the publisher Clive Bingley taken and the resulting KG Saur Publishing Ltd. founded.
Due to economic difficulties in some locations, the London subcontractor was sold to the local Library Association in 1978 , the New York subcontractor was also sold, but the group in Oxford took over Hans Zell Publishers . In 1983 the local publishing house was re-established in New York. In 1987 the publishing house was sold to Reed International in London, two years later the Bern publishing house Francke AG and another year later the Frankfurt publishing house Art Address was taken over.
In 1991 the company moved to a new location in the Sendling-Westpark district . In the same year, the takeover of Meckler Publishing in New Haven and the general artist lexicon from EA Seemann Verlag in Leipzig took place . In 2000 the publishing house was taken over by the Gale Group of the Thomson Corporation . In 2005 the publisher bought the important humanities Max Niemeyer Verlag .
In 2006, Saur / Niemeyer was finally taken over by the De Gruyter publishing house . Since then, the publisher's products have appeared under the De Gruyter umbrella brand.
Publications
The works include the German Biographical Encyclopedia (DBE) , the Bibliotheca Teubneriana and the World Biographical Information System with biographical information on almost 5 million people, from the 4th millennium BC to the present. In 1981 the complete list of German-language literature was completed, a retrospective national bibliography for the German-speaking area. The library science series and works are continued in the De Gruyter Saur imprint .
