The Schönach is a small river in the Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau . After a roughly 14 km long run from the north to the east in the municipality of Hohenfurch in the storage area behind the Lech barrage 8 from the left into the middle Lech .

The headwaters of the Schönach are located on the edge of the forest north-north-west of the eponymous town of Schwabsoien at 763  m above sea level. NHN . It initially flows southwest to south, crosses the parish village of Schwabsoien, then takes on the Reigerbach from the right in the area of ​​the municipality of Schwabbruck and turns there on a west to northwest run through the parish village of Schwabbruck . The settlement zone of the eponymous parish village of the next municipality Altenstadt runs through it in a southerly curve, where it runs north to the soon following associated church village Schwabniederhofen and it passes on the eastern edge of the settlement on the north run. At the municipality and settlement border with Hohenfurch , it crosses the Schongau – Landsberg am Lech railway line and then runs through the parish and municipality on an eastern to northeastern course. Below Hohenfurch, it runs through a deep, but only short forest ravine for the first time and flows at its end under the wasteland Graben on the left shoulder of the slope at 659  m above sea level. NHN from the left into the middle Lech which is widened behind the Lech barrage 8 - Sperber .

Catchment area and runoff

The catchment area of ​​the Schönach is almost 72 km², its discharge fluctuates between 2 m³ / s ( low water ) and 50 m³ / s ( high water ). The mostly flat valley of the Schönach marks the edge of the mighty Lech glacier , which extended to Hohenfurch in the last ice age .

history

In the past, the Schönach played an important role, especially for the town of Schwabsoien, as its water power was the prerequisite for the operation of a number of mills and forges. Some of these facilities still exist today and can be visited every year on Whit Monday, the German Milling Day .
