Eurhynchium ,called Schönschnabelmoose in German, is a genus of moss from the Brachytheciaceae family .

description

The strong, rigid, light green to brownish-green moss plants form loose and often quite extensive lawns. They are often branched like a tree, individual branches are often extended like a flagella. The sparsely protruding leaves are broadly ovate-triangular to ovate-lanceolate, pointed and longitudinally wrinkled and have serrated and mostly flat edges all around. All leaves have a simple rib up to about 3/4 of the leaf length, with the end of the rib usually emerging as a thorn on the back of the leaf. The leaf cells are linear and thin-walled in the middle of the leaf, shorter at the base of the leaf, somewhat wider, moderately thick-walled and spotted; the leaf wing cells are rectangular. Stem leaves and branch leaves are similar, the latter somewhat narrower and smaller.

The species are dioecious . The sporophyte has a red, smooth seta and a sloping to horizontal, curved, cylindrical spore capsule with a long beaked lid.

distribution

Eurhynchium species are common in Europe and Asia. In Central Europe they are often among the most common deciduous moss species.

Systematics and types (selection)

The delimitation of the genus was seen differently depending on the author. According to the prevailing opinion today, only the following two species belong to the genus Eurhynchium :

All other previously included species have been separated into other genera:
