history

The development of Offenbach's population around 1900 was characterized by rapid industrialization and the resulting increase in the number of inhabitants. In the period from 1901 to 1913, eight general education schools were set up to cope with the rapidly increasing number of pupils. As one of these, today's Schillerschule was opened as a primary school in 1910 . The vernacular called the new building Bernardschule , in accordance with the naming of other schools in Offenbach after the street name on which the school was located. As the Bernard school, the school was named after the well-known Offenbach snuff manufacturer Nikolaus Bernard . The school was open to both boys and girls. A home economics school was located in the basement . From April 1922, the girls' training school was also housed in the Bernard School.

As a result of the urban development towards the west, the course of Bernardstrasse was changed, which is why the school was now located on Goethestrasse. In 1926 the curiosity that the Bernard School is on Goethestrasse and the Goetheschule on Bernardstrasse was ended at the instigation of the principals of both schools by renaming the Bernard School to Schillerschule.

Despite severe damage in the Second World War , school operations could be resumed in September 1945. The repair work dragged on until 1955.

The Schillerschule was under construction on August 1, 1976 by order of the Darmstadt Regional Council. As a result, the school's offer included a support level , a secondary school and a secondary school from grade 7. Grades 5 and 6, each 4 to 5-speed and each with three 7th and 8th secondary school classes, four 9th secondary school classes and one secondary school class and im 10th school year a secondary school class.

The school today

Grades 5 - 10 are offered at the Schillerschule. Each grade has 6 classes, three classes form a team. There are also two side entry classes in which students who are new to Offenbach without language skills first learn German.

The secondary school and secondary school diplomas can be obtained at the school ; In addition, the transition to the upper level of another school is possible, provided that this Abitur offers after 13 school years ( G9 ).

The Schillerschule is an all-day school.

Architecture and buildings

Main building (1911)

The four-storey main building in neo-renaissance style was built between 1908 and 1910. In 1908, government architect Völker presented the plans for the school building on the outskirts of the city. 21 school classes were originally housed in the building, as well as a gym, the school servant's apartment, four teachers 'rooms, a head teacher' s room, a conference room, two drawing rooms, a school bathroom and, as an innovation, a school kitchen in which the children were instructed in cooking and nutrition.

The building is made of plaster with sandstone structure, sandstone edging and curved gables. A two-storey sandstone bay window with relief fields can be found on the south facade, which is only slightly windowed . Above it is a clock with the date "1909". The stepped gable is decorated with volutes and balls. At the eaves sides the building is four storeys formed with simple Lisenengliederung , broad eight-axle means risalit and dormer in the mansard roof . Inside the house, parts of the original furnishings such as garments with relief fields or stairs have been preserved.

Today the building is supplemented by modern school buildings.

The school building is a listed building .
