Nizip ( Zaza Sêwrege , Kurdish بێلقیس Bêlqîs ) is a district town in the east of the Turkish province of Gaziantep .
history
On June 24, 1839, a battle between the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mahmud II and Egypt , which had broken away from the Ottoman Empire under Muhammad Ali Pascha , the Khedive , took place in Nizip . The Egyptian troops, which had conquered Palestine and Syria in the previous years , were under the command of Ibrahim Pasha , the son of Muhammad Ali, and triumphed over the Ottoman troops under Hafiz Pasha. Helmuth von Moltke , who later became the German field marshal , also took part in the battle as a Prussian military adviser to the Ottoman army .
Moltke recorded the impressions of his years in the Ottoman Empire in his work "Under the Crescent. Letters on Conditions and Events in Turkey from the Years 1835 to 1839" . He reported in great detail about the battle and its history.
Attractions
One of the special sights in Nizip is the fully preserved Fevkani Kilisesi Church . The exact construction date and other information are unknown. Their architectural style is similar to that of Byzantine churches that were built in the 11th and 12th centuries. A restoration of this cultural heritage did not take place for a long time because Nizip, like many other cities in the east, had too little financial means. The church served as a hostel for a while and was then used as a warehouse before restoration work began in early 2010. This, including the newly designed and expanded property around the building, led to a place that is primarily dedicated to people with disabilities and is used by various social associations. At the same time, the historical building is a tourist attraction for Nizip.
