The Burgdorf Castle is a 1643 as Amtshaus built building in Burgdorf the Hanover region in Lower Saxony . Today the two-winged half-timbered building , known as a castle, is used by the city of Burgdorf. It serves as the administrative headquarters as well as a venue for music concerts.

The office building stands on the site of the 13th century castrum burgtorfe castle . In 1433, Duke Otto IV had it rebuilt and fortified the town of Burgdorf with a rampart, double moat and four city gates . Until then, Burgdorf had a village character. In the following centuries the place and the castle were destroyed three times by armed conflicts and fires. These include destruction in 1519 during the Hildesheim collegiate feud , in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War and in 1658 by a city fire.

The office building was owned by Guelf dukes. In his Topographia Germaniae from 1654, Merian describes it as the Princely Lüneburg Palace or Office House . The office building served the dukes as a hunting lodge and conference venue. Between 1674 and 1714, over 100 conferences were held there, at which the privy councils of the principalities of Celle, Hanover and Wolfenbüttel met. After the Königsmarck affair of 1694, the divorce of the Hereditary Princess Sophia Dorothea von Celle from Prince Elector Georg Ludwig was negotiated in the office building .

Since 1705 the office building has only served as the administrative seat. A site plan from 1756 shows the two-winged building on an island-like area surrounded by the stream of Burgdorfer Aue . At that time there was an extensive palace park to the west of the building . The governor had his seat in the administrative building from 1714 to 1885. After that, it was used by the Burgdorf district , which was merged with the Hanover district in 1976 . Between 1979 and 1981 the building was extensively renovated. The building facade, designed in the Baroque style , was reconstructed.
