The Burgwerben castle or manor Burgwerben is a Grade II listed building in the district Burgwerben the city Weissenfels in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments it is recorded as a monument under registration number 094 15643 .

General

In the late 9th century, a castle called Uuirbinaburg is mentioned. At that time there were at least three places and two castles near Weißenfels that were named Uuirbina . It was only later that identifiers were added to these places in order to better distinguish them. This gave rise to the place names Markwerben , Tagewerbe , Reichardtswerbe and the place with the probably more important castle, Burgwerben.

It is not exactly clear whether components of the first castle are still preserved at today's location, as it is not clear what material the early medieval occupation castles were made of. Of today's buildings, only the cellar is very old. It probably originated in the High Middle Ages or later. It is believed that the castle used to stretch over a much larger part and that the outer bailey was roughly where the church is today.

Depending on the resident, the building was called a castle or a manor .

Today there is a small viticulture museum in a side wing of the castle.

history

From the beginning of the 15th century to the middle of the 16th century, the complex was owned by the von Haugwitz family , including Jan von Haugwitz, the grandfather of Katharina von Bora . Over the centuries the castle was owned by the von Bothfeld, von Stahr, von Funcke families and finally the Reinhardt families.

Before the Battle of Roßbach , a battle during the Seven Years' War , the Prince of Saxony-Hildburghausen used the castle as quarters from October 30 to November 2, 1757, and after the battle Frederick the Great stayed one night as a guest of the Funcke family. A reproduction of a painting showing Friedrich in Burgwerben hangs in the restored hall of the palace. In 1879 the castle passed into the possession of the Reinhardt family, who owned it until it was expropriated in the period after the Second World War . The castle complex was used as a residence, a base for agricultural engineering, an administration building and a school. During this time not much was done to maintain the complex and it continued to deteriorate. The municipality of Burgwerben bought the palace complex in 2007 and transferred it to the Weindorf Burgwerben eG citizens' cooperative founded in 2009 . Since 2011, the castle has been repaired by the voluntary members of the citizens' cooperative and the history of the castle is researched.

architecture

Most of the buildings in the palace complex that are preserved today probably date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Part of the palace complex dates from around 1910, including the veranda . In some rooms traces have been discovered that indicate an attempt to build a chapel .

main building

The two-story main building is located in the center of the courtyard of the palace complex. The baroque portal of the main building dates from the 17th century. There is a hipped roof on the main building .

Askanian widow seat

One of the elongated buildings on the side of the hall, which is equipped with a striking frieze , is probably the widow's residence of Eilika Billung, wife of Otto von Ballenstedt and mother of Albrecht the Bear . According to Dehio, the building was built or rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 16th century.

park

A small landscape park also belonged to the palace complex.

location

The palace complex is located in Burgwerben on Weinstrasse and can be seen from the Saale .
